Friends and Relations

Elizabeth Bowen's novel 'Friends and Relations' is, as suggested by the title, the story of a group of friends and relations and of their lives during the ten year period the novel covers. Laurel, the very pretty daughter of Colonel and Mrs Studdart, marries Edward Tilney, the only son of Lady Elfrida Tilney, an ageing but still beautiful woman with a rather chequered past who was divorced by her husband after having a passionate love affair. Laurel's younger sister, the dark and quietly beautiful Janet, spends the wedding day organizing the guests, one of whom is Theodora Thirdman, an ungainly but perceptive teenager - who, when overhearing a conversation between Lady Elfrida and another guest, surmises that there is an attraction between Janet and her sister's husband, Edward. However, before long, Janet has become engaged and then married to Rodney Meggatt, a situation which causes difficulties for the Tilneys, as Rodney is the nephew of Considine Meggatt, the ex-lover of Lady Elfrida and the man whom Edward blames for his unhappy and insecure childhood. As the years pass and we move between the London home of the Tilneys' and the countryside home of the Meggatts', we read of how their lives intertwine and of the interplay of the relationships between the families. And as we read on, we learn of how when Lady Elfrida and Considine finally meet up again at the Meggatt family home, the situation brings the over-emotional and highly-strung Edward to the brink of recklessness.As one would expect from Elizabeth Bowen, this is a beautifully written novel with some lovely descriptions of situation and setting - the cover on my Penguin Twentieth Century Classics edition of afternoon tea being taken in a drawing room with open windows looking out onto lawns and rolling hills, encapsulates the feeling I experienced from reading this novel. However, this story, with its rituals of polite social intercourse, is not all tea on the lawn, and simmering underneath the surface are feelings and desires that threaten to spill out into daily life. It is true, that despite the tableau being beautifully described, the characters and their motivations are elusive and, at times, opaque; feelings are hinted at; emotions are alluded to, and nothing is clearly or entirely expressed. For some readers, who may not be familiar with this author's elegant and subtle style of storytelling, and prefer more pace and plot to their fiction, this may not satisfy, but I always enjoy Ms Bowen's writing and, although this is not my favourite of her novels, I found this an interesting and entertaining read.4 Stars.
