This is an account of a woman dealing with breast cancer.

Audre Lorde is a black activist,lesbian and an angry woman.This book is an account of her experience of having breast cancer.She made the decision to have a total mastectomy as the sole means of treatment.She also made the decision not to wear any prosthesis or have reconstructive surgery.The interesting part of this book is the recognition of her lack of understanding of `Who am I` my body or my `self`?Many women who have had this disease suffer the same quandry.Until the question of the nature of selfhood is resolved anger will permeate the persons life as it seemed to have done to Audre Lorde This is a valuable book because there is little written about a person`s altering sense of self because of illness.

The Cancer Journals

'The Cancer Journals' provides a vivid account of the disruption caused by breast cancer. Lorde, with inspiring strength and courage, desribes her difficulties in finding a narrative of meaning and value which she could attribute to her continued existence. The narrative she discovers is one which suits her own individual identity as a black, homosexual, feminist poet. Beautifully written.
