An undercover mission beyond the Iron Curtain to recover a defected scientist goes disastrously wrong – a classic early Cold War thriller from the acclaimed master of action and suspense. Now reissued in a new cover style.
Michael Reynolds was going insane … slowly but inevitably insane. And the most terrible part of it was that he knew it. Since the last forced injection, there had been nothing he could do about the relentless onset of this madness. The more he struggled to ignore the symptoms, the more acutely he became aware of them, the deeper into his mind dug those fiendish chemical claws that were tearing his mind apart…

By Lazaros K.
I discovered Alistair Mc Lean long after watching "The Guns of Navarone" in the movie theater, back in the early sixties. After all I was just a boy of 10 back then. But I am also Greek, and I was naturally thrilled with the context of the movie(even if the prominent Greek hero was a Mexican-Anthony Quinn !!).To this day no other author has given me the thrills I enjoyed reading his books in my late teens and thereafter.I have chosen this particular book of his --although it could have been any of many others--because I have always found it to be the epitomy of THE "cold war" spy story. It just has everything in it.Heroes and villains,in the purest sense of the word. The main hero,in particular,is out of this world. He is simply perfect. Not just a perfect spy, educated, innovative and brilliant,in both intellectual and physical prowess, but his morality is also beyond reproach. He is "ethical"to the brim ! He even refuses to shoot the arch-villain at the end,in spite of all the crimes he has comitted, just because he offers the moral justification that ""..his reasons would be of no interest to an enemy agent from the west"!!!I don't know how much of a child has survived in me.But,although reality and experience have tought me otherwise,I still cherish the "pure hero" idea deep in my heart. The selfless, patriotic, brilliant, fearless, ingenious agent who fights for king, country, freedom, justice and democracy, for the victory of good over evil ,being rewarded only by anonymity and a meagre civil cervants salary.Alistair Mac Leans stories are marvellous reads(At least those written before he moved to the U.S.A.).Gripping plots, filled with brilliant twists ,breathtaking cliffhangers and magnificent feats of action. But what makes his stories special are their heroes(...superheroes would not be excessive...).Not the cynical and ruthless James Bond types, but moralistic idealist superagents !A breed of people that ,even if it most probably does not exist,it should be invented. And Mc Lean did just that !I,for one,am truly grateful !

By Victor
Published in 1959 this was Alistair MacLean's fourth full length fiction novel. It was originally published in the US as `The Secret Ways'. Though two of his previous novels (Guns Of Navarone and South By Java Head) had elements of subterfuge, double cross and betrayal in them, this was his first real foray into the espionage thriller. It was also the first of his books to be set contemporaneous to publication and not in the second world war.Written at the height of the cold war, this is a tense and exciting thriller that, unusually for MacLean books, takes a bit of time to explore the motivations and characters of the protagonists rather than just lurching from action set piece to action set piece. That's not to say that there isn't a lot of thrilling action along the way. Michael Reynolds is on a mission in Russian occupied Hungary to rescue an important western scientist who is being coerced into working with the communists. The bulk of the book is an exciting tale where he and Jennings are on the run form the Hungarian secret police, trying to get to safety across the border with the help of the Hungarian Underground. Along the way there is the usual betrayal and doublecross, but also quite a bit of character development as the freedom fighters are explored and Reynolds transforms from a single minded agent intent on getting Jennings adn himself out into a committed believer in the Underground's cause. It's a well written book in which MacLean takes the time to describe the political situation as well as his usual attention to detail with the locales, and this allows him to really build up the tension. It's a great book from MacLean's golden period, and a recommended read. 5 stars.
