In the 46 days from 10th May 1940, when Hitler's main offensive in the West was launched, to 25th June, when the Franco-German armistice was signed in the railway carriage at Rethondes, the French army suffered a series of catastrophic reverses But it was already beaten beyond recovery on 15th May, that fateful day when the German Panzers crossed the Meuse and began their race westwards towards the Channel to cut off the Allied armies in Belgium and precipitate the disaster of Dunkirk.
