You would have thought that having two curious Siamese cats and a tortoise with wanderlust was enough. Not so for Doreen and her husband Charles, who decide to take on a baby donkey to keep the nettles under control in the orchard. When Annabel clip-clops into their lives they realise that, from the ear-splitting nocturnal howling to the numerous escape attempts, living with a donkey won’t be plain sailing. Annabel eats everything apart from the nettles, but eventually becomes a much-loved family member and particularly close to Solomon, the Siamese cat, who sleeps in her bed. Further dramas ensue when Henry, the jennet, is introduced as a companion to Annabel and love blossoms.

By Mrs. Teresa C. M. Nutkins
Donkey Work, by the late Doreen Tovey.Greatly saddened to learn, just before Christmas, that a favourite author had died as long ago as January 2008, I was determined to track down the few books that I required to complete my collection. Am several chapters into this book which is so far, a true delight to read. The typical humour one associates with Doreen Tovey's books is there;owning cats myself, (one Siamese and a Burmese) I understand the antics of which these felines are capable. Here we meet dear Charles, Doreen's husband in the story of how Annabel the donkey comes to stay with the Toveys. I believe it to be quite an early book because Solomon and Sheba are the resident cats. Father Adam and Miss Wellington have already appeared as has the Riding School........it's proving to be one of those books you cannot put down. After much laughter, perhaps some tears, I know reading it will be to me a true tonic. Thank you Doreen, for having written those books which have brought me so much pleasure over the years.Teresa C.M.Nutkins

By Mary
This is an amusing account of life with a donkey. Anyone who owns these lovely animals will appreciate the trials and tribulations of getting to know your donkey's character, so aptly described in this book. The Toveys certainly learnt not to underestimate the intelligence of these clever equines, whilst at the same time finding endless amusement with Annabelle, the little donkey who quietly crept in to a corner of their hearts. Those thinking of getting a donkey (or two!) will hopefully not be put off, but more determined to understand their foibles and enjoy the fun of ownership and the love that will undoubtedly develop between you and your long-earned companions.

By Clare O'Beara
I have owned this book for decades and it appeals to readers of all ages. There are no children characters, but kids will enjoy reading about two adults in a cottage in the West Country, because the other main characters are Siamese cats Solomon and Sheba, and donkey Annabel. Annabel is supposed to eat the thistles and bracken, but she comes direct from her mum and she's a bit fussy. Really, she prefers cake. Yes, people come to the gate and feed her cake and bread, so why bother with weeds? Charles her owner tells Doreen that donkeys shouldn't eat sharp dead bracken as it is bad for them. The new stems seem sharpish to them... so Charles gets out his scythe to mow them down like before while Doreen chases the cats and worries that Father Adams and her other neighbours will think she's gone potty. The tale is a hilarious account of country life and the smallest things are recorded, such as the cats insisting that Doreen wear an old tweed skirt every night so they can sit on her lap. Buy it, love it.
