A very well plotted story

It's about 18 months since I read Blue Lightning Blue Lightning (Shetland) the book preceding this one in the Shetland Series. In this book the consequence of the events with which Blue Lightning ended are ever-present here, haunting Jimmy Perez. He is even more withdrawn than normal. In fact he is on sick leave and when there is a murder on the northern Mainland of Shetland a detective inspector is called in from across the water to head up the investigation. Sandy's new boss is unorthodox. A woman, called Willow, who grew up in the Western Isles. Perez is drawn slowly back into work-mode by her presence and I guess this won't be the last time Willow comes to Shetland.A young man, a journalist returning to the island for a visit from the South of England is murdered. Shetland the home of oil tankers and now the land base for gas brought in for the sea is looking to its future without carbon fuels. There is controversy between groups promoting wave and tide energy projects and other residents seeking to preserve their outlook. The disputes are bitter and the characters in this tale are on one side or other of the debate. A young journalist back in the island for a visit from the South of England is murdered, but why and by whom? Was it a scandalous story he was after or did something else get him killed? There's tension too between the detectives as Sandy, Willow and Perez are lacking somewhat in the teamwork department.Perhaps the ending is a little predictable but only in retrospect. This was a gripping read from start to finish, really well told and it will hard to get a worthy successor to read tonight.

I have never been to the Shetlands. If I was asked about favourite books I would put this one very high on the list. Cleeves brilliantly creates a community living in the British Isles but seemingly far away from the amenities of urban life where within the community there are invisible walls which discourage outsiders from invading the privacy of the inhabitants even for a murder case. Willow is a wonderful creation . She is a bit like VERA STANHOPE because she does not fit in to what one would expect of a female detective. The description of the landscape and the dialogue between characters blend beautifully .

Not on a par with the first 4?

I enjoyed the first four books - especially the setting - having some background in (other) Scottish islands.So I was quite excited to discover there is a 5th and read it pretty much at one sitting on a long journey.The setting and characterisation were totally up to standard but the denouement of the crime was not satisfactory and came over as totally implausible given how the characters had been presented. Maybe I just don't have the right experience of human sexual relationships for it to seem likely the people would have carried on as they did, Maybe my notion of a God fearing person in island terms is skewed by my personal experience so as to enhance that implausibility.However, I would like to read more of Jimmy Perez' story.
