5Antidote to Venom
By Keen Reader
This book was first published in 1938. Freeman Wills Crofts (1879-1957) was a well-known author in the golden age of British crime fiction, and his works were acclaimed by Agatha Christie and Raymond Chandler. Prior to the publication of this work, Crofts had already published some 20 crime fiction novels. Early on in these books, the character of Inspector Joseph Finch was introduced, and reappears in many works from then on. Inspector Finch appears in this book, but not until we are well into the second half of the story. This book was, in the author's own words a "two-fold experiment: first, it is an attempt to combine the direct and inverted types of detective story and second, an effort to tell a story of crime positively". The setting is Birmington Zoo, where George Surridge is the director. George loves his work, but feels under a lot of strain lately. Some of his animals are falling sick, his marriage is not successful, and his finances are suffering under his spending habits. His elderly aunt is ailing, and may not be long for this world, and George feels he has expectations there. But he can't wish for his aunt to die; can he?The first half of this book takes us into George's tortured mind and thoughts; he struggles through his daily tasks, worrying about his home life, his finances, and his animals. He frets about when the fates will overtake him, and what can he possibly do to avert any trouble for himself? The reader is taken along on George's own difficult struggle with his current life, and when he thinks he has found a solace, if not a solution to some of his problems, we follow him through what he feels is his best chance for happiness. But then we are struck, as is George, by some very unexpected news. And in the second half of the book the narrative turns from where we, as reader, have been sharing an empathy with this poor hard-done-by character, to a narrative of a police procedural. The tables are turned as we view events from a very different perspective, and we really have no idea, until the last page, what could possibly come of all the events of which we have been reading. This is a masterly book; it takes the norm of a crime novel and turns it upon its head and then inside out, taking us right inside the events as they unfold and to their conclusions. I look forward to reading more by the author, and I wholeheartedly recommend this to any reader looking for a good classic crime fiction read.

Very enjoyable. The first half of book is from the criminal's perspective, the second half is more the investigation.
