A snapshot 36 hours in 38 regions, very inspirational… not your typical travel book

It also recommends reliable hotels and lodgings – I must admit I find ‘the basics’ section not especially useful for my purposes as I am generally planning a longer trip and so will do more research on the area as a whole, for example LA you will notice is split into three sections covering very specific neighbourhoods – the images and information for certain spots it great, but I am incorporating all this into a much larger itinerary.And that’s just it for me with this book, what I like about it is the genuinely inspiring images and insider information, it feels like it’s written by locals and clued up individuals, and the writing style is very engaging.Having done a lot of online research of LA it’s good to see that my research of places we would like match up with some of the snapshot suggestions in the book.If you are looking for a straight laced guide book, this won’t be for you. But if looking for general inspiration or if you just want to read a little about potential day trips on the west coast (as we did with no holiday booked), then this is a very nice read indeed. We will certainly be buying others from this series.

West Coast is the best coast.

This is now my second book from the series, and whilst the first one The New York Times, 36 Hours: Europe is a lengthy and heavy tome, this one is merely 200 pages long and (whilst still heavy) could be easily taken on the trip to explore the West Coast of the USA. The concept is brilliant - "36 hours" is a book full of schedules for the 36 hour stay in various places across the West Coast, all neatly organised by the area.I imagine the book will have to be re-released every year or so, like any other guide, to be on top of the game. It makes a lovely addition to your coffee table book and is INDEED full of relevant and useful information (complied straight form the New York Times website) for those who are planning the West Coast road trip (and beyond!). It can be also a leisurely read if you need travel inspiration. Of course, this guide is no way comprehensive and if you are looking for quirky places and unknown and hidden from the general tour mass spots, this won't be your ideal guide. I think not even a separate standing guide-book with 200+ pages devoted to one city could cover everything worth seeing and visiting, and as the cities are living and breathing organisms, they constantly evolve, new places appear while old ones close down, and sometimes you find yourself in an amazing church/spot/location/bar/restaurant/attraction of the city by pure chance, lucky enough to get to one or another pop-up attraction that won't be there in a couple of months. I don't think it is fair to blame this book for lack of description of such IT places.Anyway, I enjoy and cherish my "36 hours" books, they are great travelling companions (subject to yearly updates!). And yes, these books will make great Christmas (or birthday, or any other) gifts!
