By Peter Taylor
This is a fantastic book with superb photos and equally superb illustrations. Each section is supplemented with a superb graphic illustrations of cabin type with supplementary plans and details where necessary. Its a very big book too so you get lots to see and read. This edition in English- French and German - there are other language combinations in other editions but the whole emphasis is visual not literary. This is also not a technical book and does not pretent to be. If you are thinking of building a cabin somewhere yourself buy a construction type book ( in addition to this). It is however a series of masterful inspirational concepts made real with some general description of the building itself. The whole book is harmonised with a consistent approach to photos and graphic illustrations so reads as a whole story, not a series of isolated events. There is also a compendium of Architects at the back of the book with Architects office details if you are thinking of having one designed for you. I'm an Architect myself and have very many books on Architecture but for sheer visual joy this is my clear favorite. Highly recommended for the design conscious and an asset to any coffee table anywhere, which is where I first saw a copy - in a classy furniture store in Mexico City.

By Nick Bowles
What a disappointment, my first Taschen dud. The book is visually unsatisfying, in that the photographs are insufficient in number and detail to give any idea of what a building is like to live in. Most of the buildings featured seem to be play houses for the rich, and appear to be unused or unusable despite the numerous (often uncredited) visual references to great architects, there are a few crackers but overall there aren't many great houses here, as for the ones that are hotels well this is just an advert for them.I wanted to see real people make solutions to living in small places that would inspire, instead what we have here is what a lot of rich people do when they can afford an indulgence, they hire an architect to "bring the outside inside" or "establish a dialogue between water and sky / get close to nature (really, in Australia, are you mental)", or some such nonsense. There are some stunning houses, but also ridiculous things that even the creators admit are not to be lived in, just art pieces. My advice is to browse cabins or tiny houses on Pinterest, you'll get way more ideas and it's free.
