2Dreary and old fashioned
By Lynds
I bought the Kindle version of this as I had read and enjoyed all of the Shetland series by the same author.I won't be bothering to read any more of the Ramsey books though. It really does feel as though this book was written by a different person from a different long gone era where every character (perhaps with the exception of Jack) is painted as a stereotype, and all the dialogue is stilted and unrealistic.

3A beginner's book
By Tullolad
It soon becomes clear that this is afar from recent work by this popular author. It is one of her earliest, re-issued, very much a beginner's book - clunky, not all that believable, wooden characters and plodding along in terms of both writing and plot. We know, of course, that she can do much better as proven by her later Shetland and Vera series. So this is of historical interest more than anything else - shallow yet heavy going, like a terribly muddy puddle.

2Clumsy
By SueN
Ann Cleeves has honed her craft as a novelist and this early offering from 1990 shows promise but is ultimately unsatisfying. Village life is well drawn but the notion of a father and daughter duo solving a double murder is ludicrous and the police investigation sloppy. It concludes in a clumsy fashion, as if she rushed to decide on the perpetrator.
