I have read many Ann Cleeves books and usually really enjoy them, to the point where I will read the whole series, one after the other.This however was something of a different format and seemed to have fewer characters with amateur sleuths in the lead.I have to say I didn't really get hooked into the story and didn't really care who did it. I did finish it and it was an easy read last thing at night (last Anne Cleeves book I read I was up until two in the morning so I could finish it!An easy read but not what I would have expected of Ms Cleeves!

I very much like Ann Cleeves as a writer and have enjoyed the Shetland quartet immensely, so I was disappointed that this book didn't quite meet the same standard. It may be that these are earlier books ( I didn't check) but there was little or no tension or suspense in the plot, the investigating character was unattractive in his manner, not flawed in the heartfelt sense of many fictional detectives or investigators, just boring, uninteresting and an irritable individual that I didn't take to at all (his wife looks more promising), which as a consequence made the book a slow burner for me, there was no pace, you had the feeling that he didn't care if he solved the crime or not not and as a consequence neither does the reader, or this reader anyhow. Disappointing....

I want to read all her books

Someone recommended that I read the first book in the Shetland Island Quartet, Raven Black, and I did. I could not put it down. This lead me on to start reading other books by this author although it would appear some of them are hard to get hold of. I managed to buy a used copy of 'A Bird in the Hand' which has started me off on the 'Palmer-Jones' stories. The way the author writes has you captivated from the beginning and with the detail of the areas she places the stories, you immediately imagine yourself there, especially so if you have visited the areas before. This book was no different than the others I have read in as far as I was sure that I knew who had committed the murder, but I was wrong. I am now looking to purchase the next book on the list. As mentioned, I have read one of the Shetland Quartet, One Palmer-Jones and also Vera Stanhope; try the books featuring her, you will immediately get an image of how she is, they are brilliant. And I will eventually get on to the Inspector Ramsey series.
